pain and swelling on top of left foot...

I have a knot(i guess) that came up on the top of my left foot. It is extremely painful and there is swelling of my whole foot. When I wear socks and tennis shoes, its like the sock is too tight and leaves a ring at my ankle. I work where I am constantly on my feet..It has gotten so bad I just want to cut it off myself. I cant move my toes dont know why, I can move my big toe but not the other four....I have no insurance and can't afford a drs. visit but iam at my wits end. This is the second time this knot has appeared before was about 3 months ago it was much smaller and went away or so i thought, but it has reared its ugly head bigger and more painful than before..Canu you assist me in what this might be. I do have plantar fascitis in both of my feet, could this have something to do with the other?The pain is a sharp sudden pain it almost brings tears to my eyes, i' only 38 yrs old and this should'nt be happening to me yet....

Hi Stephanie,
In reading about your problem, the first thought that came to mind is that this is going to require medical attention and then you mentioned you do not have health insurance.
If you can tolerate them, I would take advil or motrin as directed on the package for about 10-14 days, to see if that will reduce the inflammation. Additionally, you may have to invest in a slightly larger shoe in an effort to keep pressure off the lump.
Since I do not know what is actually causing this lump or knot, I suspect it may be a ganglion cyst, ultimately you will have to seek medical attention if your symptoms do not improve.

Thank you for the information. I have been taking Motrin for over a week now. The knot has went down about a day ago. As soon as my insurance comes in effect I'm going to the doctor..Again, thank you for the information. Also, I do have a ganglion cyst on my left wrist for years now so that's proably what that is on my left foot.Thank you again...Stephanie

Dear Dr. Mitnick, The orthotics arrived four days ago and I slipped them into my shoes immediately. I was skeptical as to the usefulness of the item, they really didn't look very exotic. I have to say though, after using them for just four days, I have experienced grand relief from my foot pain. Even the very first day, I was able to do a lot of work while on my feet with at least a 75% reduction of pain. It has only gotten better every day, and I go nowhere without my shoes with the orthotics. I had been experiencing extreme heel and sole pain for about six months and had to take extended breaks off my feet many times a day as well as regular doses of Ibuprofen. Since getting the orthotics, my life has returned to normal and I feel good again. Just wanted to say thanks for the recommendation for a very effective item, I had no idea what a change this item could affect.

Dr. Mitnick, Thank you, you were 100% correct. The pain finally brought me to the ER. I spent 8 days in the hospital. The Doppler you spoke of was able to show that there was no pulse in that foot. This was an arterial clot that split and traveled throughout my leg. My leg was almost amputated. I am in rough shape but have all my parts intact!! You certainly know what you are talking about. Dr. Mitnick, Just want to say thank you so very much for your quick response and very informative reply! After reading what you had to say, I called the doctor's office and was able to get in and see him the same day as my injury. Toe was x-rayed and luckily, it is not broken or fractured. Very badly bruised and will probably lose the toe nail. And although my toe and toe nail are still very black and blue and very sore, they ARE both starting to feel a little better. So again, thank you! I am so very happy that I came across your website. The service you provide is outstanding and immeasurable!
